We actually have a lot to learn from Iran: A former world superpower that brought scientific advancements to humanity, now reduced to an oppressive theocracy... Take notes people, in 200 years, the part of Iran will be played by the Formerly United States.

I'm going to stick with disliking them because they're a brutally oppressive theocratic regime if that's alright.

Got any "dislike' to spare for the country whose bullying interference and subversion made them into that?

Well, they "gave" us math, so ... we don't really have any right to complain here.
For once, you can't blame the creator of a word or concept for what people did with it 1200 years later.
It's not like they came up with, I dunno, a website that invited college men to assess the perceived farkability of college women 20 years ago that has now turned into a "shiatty opinions from some of the worst people on earth 24 hours a day" machine. THAT asshole has a lot more to answer for than anybody in Iran does in regards to the use of algorithms.

I'm still holding a grudge about them rooting for the University of Michigan through an official diplomatic account. Screw the Wolverines.

I know NPR isn't math people, but it's still weird that they make algorithms sound like some modern thing. Algorithms weren't invented by al-Khwarizmi; they're as old as civilization. Any math problem more complex than single-digit arithmetic is going to need a well-defined procedure to solve. The Babylonians had algorithms. The Egyptians had algorithms. They didn't call them that, but they had them.
But it wasn't until the 1930s and what we now call computer science that algorithms were considered as mathematical objects, which may be what people have trouble wrapping their heads around.

You are pretty much correct but it's important to point out that the heart of LLM functionality is less about rigid classical algorithmic code and more about non-deterministic statistical prediction. Yes there's a ton of algorithms all around it but you won't get the same answer twice when you input the exact same question.

You're right - we're adults and are allowed and even expected to have complex feelings.
And boy, this situation is a doozy.
Like, Iran's leadership sucks but I hope their people are okay and also I consider myself a patriot but can't help but feel filled with schadenfreude at our own awful leadership's self-inflicted misery.

Subby comes across as the stereotypical anti-intellectual American.
