Gavin Ramsbottom was a firm favourite on ITV’s Benidorm - but what is the actor Hugh Sachs up to now? Hugh joined the beloved sitcom back in its first series in 2007 as Gavin, who rocked up to the Solana resort with boyfriend and future husband Troy (Paul Bazely). And it didn’t take them long to become a hit with fans. The actor remained on the programme - which was axed in 2018 - for five series until he left in 2012. Since then, Hugh has remained booked and busy. But why did he leave Benidorm? And what major Netflix show does Hugh appear in? Here, we’re taking a look inside Hugh’s life. As well as Benidorm, Hugh has appeared in several projects over the years. He’s had roles in the likes of The Catherine Tate Show, Footballers’ Wives and My Family. He also played Brimsley in Netflix hit period drama Bridgerton since the first series. Brimsley is the gossip-obsessed right-hand man to Queen Charlotte, played by Golda Rosheuvel. And it’s fair to say after realising Brimsley is played by Hugh, Bridgerton fans were left picking up their jaws off the floor. “When you realise Hughesly (queens aid) in #bridgerton is Gavin from #benidorm," one person said on X previously. Someone else wrote: “Why is Gavin from Benidorm in Bridgerton?” A third chimed in: “Can’t believe that non-Brits are watching #queencharlotte completely unaware that the actor who plays the older Brimsley is THE Gavin from Benidorm. a legend, an icon.” Hugh is an out and gay man. While it is not known if he’s in a relationship - as he keeps his private life low-key - he previously revealed that he lives alone. What’s more, Hugh also opened up about playing gay character Brimsley in Bridgerton. Talking to Shondaland, Hugh was asked what it was like learning that he’d be playing a character who aligned with his own identity. He said: “I was completely thrilled to be part of the first queer relationship in the Bridgerton world . “Sam Clemmett as young Brimsley and Freddie Dennis as Reynolds, plus Shonda Rhimes’ beautiful script in Queen Charlotte, captured everyone’s heart, and it was an honour to be involved.” Hugh played Gavin in Benidorm and has since become one of the show’s most recognisable characters. Talking about being a part of the programme, Hugh previously said: “ ITV took a risk with Benidorm and the stars aligned. “The writing is very truthful and we really show how holidays can be a pressure cooker for people. It also helped that, apart from Johnny Vegas, none of us was that well-known, so the viewers could buy into who we were playing.” He also discussed being recognised by fans: “It is lovely to be in something people have seen, and they usually say the most wonderful things. Sometimes, however, I get groups of children trying to show off to their mates by screaming ‘Benidorm!’ at me, so I have to run into a shop to escape.” Unfortunately for fans, Hugh left the show in 2012 and didn’t return.
