Coinbase vs. Paypal: Two Fintech Giants, Two Very Different Price Tags. Which Stock Wins?
In this news:
Key takeaways
- Coinbase reported revenue of nearly $7.2 billion in FY 2025 with a net income of approximately $1.3 billion.
- PayPal reported FY 2025 revenue of nearly $33.2 billion and a net income of roughly $5.2 billion.
- Coinbase trades at a significantly higher valuation compared to PayPal based on earnings and sales multiples.
The case for Coinbase Global
Coinbase Global operates as a key player for the cryptocurrency economy, representing one of the most prominent fintech stocks in the space. The company generates revenue primarily through transaction fees, with concentrated volume in Bitcoin and Ethereum trading pairs. Subscription and services revenue is heavily supported by stablecoin revenue in partnership with Circle Internet Group, which handles issuance and redemption for its stablecoin USDC.
In FY 2025, revenue reached nearly $7.2 billion, representing roughly 9.4% year-over-year growth. The company reported a net income of approximately $1.3 billion, resulting in a net margin of close to 17.6%. This reflects a change from FY 2024, when revenue was roughly $6.6 billion and net income was nearly $2.6 billion, a period that included significant tax-related adjustments.
As of its December 2025 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio is approximately 0.51x. This ratio measures total debt against shareholder equity, showing the company maintains a balanced level of leverage. The current ratio, which measures the ability to pay short-term debts with current assets, is roughly 2.3x. Free cash flow reached nearly $2.4 billion in FY 2025. Note that stock-based compensation represented roughly 34.6% of operating cash flow, which inflates reported cash generation since stock-based compensation is a non-cash expense added back in the cash flow statement.
The case for PayPal
PayPal operates a massive two-sided network that connects roughly 439 million active consumer and merchant accounts globally. It provides a suite of solutions including digital wallets, branded checkout, and peer-to-peer transfers through Venmo and Xoom. The company recently launched an exclusive AI-powered native checkout integration with Glance, aiming to streamline the transaction process for millions of U.S. shoppers.
In FY 2025, revenue reached nearly $33.2 billion, which is a growth rate of approximately 4.3% over the prior year. Net income for the period was roughly $5.2 billion, yielding a net margin of close to 15.8%. This shows a steady upward trend from FY 2024, when revenue was approximately $31.8 billion and net income was roughly $4.1 billion.
According to its December 2025 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio stands at roughly 0.49x. The current ratio is approximately 1.3x, indicating the company has $1.30 in current assets for every dollar of short-term liabilities. Free cash flow for FY 2025 was nearly $5.6 billion, which equals cash from operations minus capital expenditures. This significant cash generation provides the company with flexibility for reinvestment or returning value to shareholders.
Risk profile comparison
Coinbase Global faces significant revenue concentration risk because it depends heavily on volatile asset prices and trading volumes for Bitcoin and Ethereum. However, one key headwind was the regulatory outlook and this has improved considerably. The SEC dismissed its enforcement case against Coinbase in 2025 and has since shifted toward a more crypto-friendly approach, potentially reducing regulatory uncertainty and providing a more favorable environment for the company's long-term growth.
PayPal, meanwhile, faces intense competition from emerging payment platforms and traditional financial institutions. The company also operates under extensive financial regulations, where compliance failures could result in significant penalties. Additionally, its consumer and merchant lending businesses introduce credit risk, particularly during economic downturns when borrowers may struggle to meet their obligations.
Valuation comparison
PayPal offers a significantly lower entry point for investors based on earnings and sales, while Coinbase Global carries a premium for its specialized role in crypto.
Valuation metrics include sourcing from Financial Modeling Prep and may differ from other data providers.
The price-to-sales ratio measures the market value of the company relative to its sales over the past twelve months. The forward price-to-earnings ratio compares the current stock price to its future earnings estimates for the next year.
Which stock would I buy in 2026?
The financials of these two companies paint very different pictures. Coinbase is growing faster, with revenue increasing more than 9% in 2025 compared to PayPal's roughly 4%. However, PayPal remains the larger and more profitable business, generating nearly four times as much net income and more than twice the free cash flow.
Both companies maintain relatively healthy balance sheets, but valuation is where the differences become particularly striking.
Coinbase Global trades at roughly 55 times expected earnings and seven times annual sales, compared to just 10.7 times earnings and 1.4 times sales for PayPal. Investors are paying a substantial premium for Coinbase Global, largely reflecting expectations for continued growth in the cryptocurrency industry.
That premium could be justified if you believe crypto adoption will accelerate, but it also leaves little room for disappointment.
PayPal, meanwhile, faces challenges of its own. Its customer base has largely stagnated, and competition continues to weigh on its core checkout business. However, growing engagement among existing customers and strong momentum with Venmo suggest the company still has opportunities to expand.
For long-term investors, PayPal looks better here. Its established business, substantial cash generation, and considerably lower valuation offer a more attractive balance of risk and potential reward. PayPal doesn't need explosive growth to justify its current valuation, but it does need to demonstrate that its core business can remain competitive. At today's valuations, that appears safer to me than paying a substantial premium for Coinbase's future growth.
