Colombia US relations at a glance
Colombia and the United States established diplomatic relations on 19 June 1822, according to the State Department. A trade agreement has applied since 15 May 2012, and Colombia sells cut flowers, aluminium goods and apparel to the US market.
Under Petro, a leftist who governed from 2022 until 7 August 2026, ties soured over drug policy and sanctions. The new president took office on the constitutional date, and Washington quickly signalled support.
Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, who chairs a House spending panel on foreign affairs, announced a US presidential delegation on 6 August 2026. It included the head of the Drug Enforcement Administration and the White House drug-policy director.
Trade, tariffs and the free trade agreement
The Office of the US Trade Representative, or USTR, is the White House trade agency. It put two-way trade in goods and services at US$54.4 billion in 2025, with goods at US$37.3 billion and services US$17.1 billion.
The Census Bureau, the US statistics agency, puts 2025 goods exports to Colombia at US$19,468 million and imports at US$17,879 million. That is a US surplus of US$1,589 million, up from US$757 million in 2024.
USTR’s final notice of 28 July 2026 sets a 12.5% tariff on Colombian products from 24 July. Annexes exempt some goods, including raw materials and items the US cannot supply in enough volume.
Drugs, security and military ties
Drugs sit at the centre of the relationship. On 15 September 2026 the White House sent Congress its annual list of 23 major drug-transit and drug-producing countries for fiscal 2027.
President Trump placed Afghanistan, Bolivia, Burma and Colombia in the group that “failed demonstrably” to meet counter-narcotics duties. The determination says coca and cocaine output reached record levels under Petro, De la Espriella’s predecessor.
The President also found US aid to Colombia, Bolivia and Burma “vital to the national interests of the United States.” That finding, a waiver under US law, lets certain aid continue despite the label.
Sanctions on Petro and his circle
On 24 October 2025 the Treasury Department sanctioned Petro, his wife Verónica Alcocer, his son Nicolás and then interior minister Armando Benedetti. Treasury used Executive Order 14059, which targets people involved in the global illicit drug trade.
Treasury said Petro’s “total peace” plan gave benefits to armed groups and fed record coca and cocaine output. The wife, son and Benedetti were listed for supporting Petro.
The Office of Foreign Assets Control, OFAC, is the Treasury unit that keeps the sanctions list. Its list as downloaded on 27 October 2026 still shows all four names under the illicit-drugs programme.
