A cruel fraudster who conned Birmingham victims out of their cash has walked free from court over her huge £250,000 crypto investment scam. Faisa Ali splashed her ill-gotten gains on jewellery, travel, home improvements, vehicles and takeaways after tricking victims to hand over their 'hard-earned' cash. The 34-year-old pinched money from people who had invested into her crypto business Alpha Financial Holdings after making bogus 'guarantees' that they could not lose their money. Almost all of victims were from Somalian communities across the UK including Birmingham, Nottingham, Sheffield and London. One victim lost more than £40k due to Ali's callous fraud.
Police investigation into luxury spending
Despite claiming the cash could not be lost, Ali sent a text message to the investor WhatsApp group in March 2023 stating that she had made poor decisions and lost all of their money. Nottinghamshire Police said: “Our investigation found she had been fully aware that the value of almost all crypto currencies had fallen dramatically and consistently over the 18-month period that she operated the scheme but that she continued to use money from new investors in order to fund a luxury lifestyle.”
During the offending period of October 18, 2021, to March 22, 2023, bank statements found she'd spent £76,140.85 on jewellery, £40,845.39 on travel, £65,183.85 on home furnishings/improvements, £41,625.00 on vehicle purchases/payments and £24,030.05 on fast food. In total, 23 victims provided witness statements with their losses exceeding £200,000. The force added that detectives launched an investigation after Ali rang the police when angry investors who'd lost money turned up at her home address.
Court sentencing and proceeds recovery
Ali, of Radford, Nottingham, admitted fraud by false representation. She was handed a three-year sentence, suspended for three years, at Nottingham Crown Court on Monday, October 26. The defendant was also told to carry out 300 hours of unpaid work. A Proceeds of Crime Act hearing to recover cash and assets from Ali will take place at a future date.
Detective Constable Simon Jones, of Nottinghamshire Police's fraud unit, said: “This was a complex investigation into a calculating fraudster who systematically exploited the trust of numerous victims, stealing thousands of pounds in the process. Many of those targeted were not wealthy individuals. They had worked hard, saved carefully and, in some cases, borrowed money in the hope of securing a better future. For many of them, years and even decades of saving have been wiped out, leaving them with nothing.”
