Crypto Spent More Than $300 Million Building Political Power. Failure To Pass The CLARITY Act Exposed Its Limits.
In this news:
The cryptocurrency industry spent more than $300 million across the 2024 and 2026 election cycles building political influence in Washington. But this week's defeat of a landmark regulatory bill showed that even one of the country's best-funded political operations cannot always translate campaign spending into legislative Senate voted 49-50 Tuesday against advancing the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, falling short of the 60 votes required to move forward. Democrats were demanding concessions related to ethics, national security and the immediate fate of the legislation, however, the vote put a spotlight on the enormous political operation the cryptocurrency industry has built over the past several years, and the forces in Washington pushing back against companies and allied political groups have spent more than $300 million combined on the 2024 and 2026 elections, supporting dozens of crypto-friendly candidates and funding national advocacy campaigns, Reuters industry still has substantial resources available heading into the November midterms. Crypto political groups have roughly $130 million remaining for election spending, the news agency campaign finance records show the scale of the industry's largest political operations. Federal Election Commission records show Fairshake, a major crypto-backed super PAC, raised $137.4 million between the beginning of 2025 and July 31, 2026. It reported nearly $113 million in cash on hand at the end of that political investment followed a successful 2024 election cycle in which the industry backed candidates from both major parties who supported clearer rules for digital assets. Crypto advocates scored another major victory in 2025 when Congress approved the GENIUS Act, creating the first federal regulatory framework specifically for payment the legislation would establish clearer lines between securities and commodities regulation for digital assets, negotiations increasingly became entangled with disputes over ethics and the relationship between stablecoins and the traditional banking Donald Trump's personal involvement in cryptocurrency became one of the biggest political complications for Democrats negotiating the bill. Trump's business interests include several digital-asset ventures, and Democrats pushed for restrictions governing whether elected officials and their families can profit from crypto while in reported more than $1.4 billion in income from his family's cryptocurrency ventures in June, based on Reuters' calculation of his financial disclosure. Analysts and lobbyists interviewed by the news agency said the scale of those interests strengthened Democratic demands for tougher ethics provisions."The challenge for the industry is that this has become a partisan issue," Brian Gardner, chief Washington policy strategist at Stifel, told the news agency. "For the political left, crypto has almost become... very tied to Trump personally, and that makes it too hot to touch for many Democrats."Crypto's political operation also encountered another powerful lobbying force: the banking had pressed lawmakers for months to tighten provisions dealing with rewards offered on stablecoin holdings. The American Bankers Association and nearly 80 state banking associations argued this month that allowing digital-asset companies to offer interest-like incentives on stablecoins could encourage customers to move money out of bank deposits, reducing funds available for mortgages, small-business loans and other banking industry continued pressing for changes even after lawmakers revised the legislation ahead of Tuesday's latest version included a mechanism directing the Treasury secretary to determine whether stablecoin-related deposit outflows were causing substantial harm to community banks. Banking groups said Monday that the provision was insufficient because regulators could act only after significant deposit flight had already campaign helped prolong negotiations and contributed to some Republican opposition to the legislation, analysts and executives told Reuters. Four Republicans ultimately voted against advancing the competing lobbying campaigns illustrate the political challenge facing the crypto industry even after it emerged as a major source of campaign money. Crypto groups have sought to build a nationwide constituency around digital assets, including through Stand With Crypto, an advocacy organization backed by industry's financial capacity to continue doing so remains considerable. Fairshake's latest FEC disclosure showed $112.99 million in cash on hand as of July 31, after reporting $88.66 million in total disbursements during the 2025-2026 cycle through that , campaign money was not enough to overcome the combination of Democratic opposition, defections from Republicans and sustained pressure from banks in Tuesday's failed procedural vote does not prevent lawmakers from returning to the CLARITY Act. The crypto industry retains a large campaign war chest and has pledged to keep pressing lawmakers for a federal regulatory framework.
