Donegal Gardai warn of 'fake bank text' scam

Gardai in Donegal have warned the public about a 'fake bank text' scam, in which one victim was defrauded of €75,000.
A spokesperson for An Garda Siochana said the ongoing scam in 'happening right now' and in one week alone, seven known victims were defrauded of approximately €150,000.
Victims receive a text claiming they have an outstanding direct debit payment.
They are also urged to call a phone number immediately to resolve the issue.
When the victim calls the number provided, someone 'very polished and professional' answers.
This tricks them into trusting that they are speaking to actual bank staff.
The scammer then convinces them to hand over online banking logins, approving a two-factor authentication prompt.
Or, they are asked to set up a cryto account, where money can be 'safely' transferred.
The scammer then drains their savings in minutes.
The scammer then moves the money quickly by withdrawing it, or exchanging it for cryptocurrency and moving it.
Gardai urged people to remind their loved ones that their real bank will never ask for passwords or logins over the phone.
If in doubt, hang up and call the number on the back of your bank card.
Gardai said that fraudsters are targeting older generations, in particular, in this scam.
The Garda National Cybercrime Bureau has the following advice:
Always be wary of unsolicited call or texts and never share personal details.
Do not open a crypto account or wallet on someone else’s instruction.
Never transfer your savings on the promise of guaranteed returns or under the pretense of new account.
Do not grant someone remote access to your computer or electronic devices.
Talk to someone you trust or meet in-person with your bank or credit union before moving money.
