'Nigel Farage can't claim to be the man of the people when his party has billionaire backing'

In this news:

Nigel Farage has spent years posing as the lone wolf taking on a rotten political establishment. Now, as his personal ratings slide and the public mood appears to be turning against him, his party is sitting on £72 million from just two billionaires. Farage insists the £36 million donations from crypto tycoons Ben Delo and Christopher Harborne are legal under today’s rules. But when asked whether both men met the UK residency test that could determine whether looming restrictions apply, he was unable to give a straight answer. That evasiveness matters. YouGov now says 69% of voters view Farage unfavourably, including 57% who see him very unfavourably. For a man who has built his career on claiming to speak for ordinary people, those numbers should set alarm bells ringing. Farage can rail against the rules and attack the establishment. But a floundering leader propped up by two billionaires cannot expect voters to stop asking whose interests his party would really serve in power. Andy Burnham’s grief will be shared by millions who have watched someone they love slowly disappear into the fog of Alzheimer’s. His father Roy did not know his son had become Prime Minister. That heartbreaking fact says more about this cruel disease than any statistic ever could. But Roy’s illness also gave the Prime Minister a deeply personal understanding of the pressures families face and the extraordinary work carers do. It helped drive his determination to reform a social care system that has failed too many people for too long. Mr Burnham once said he wanted to help “my dad and the millions like him”. Those words carry even greater weight today. Roy’s legacy will now reach far beyond one family. The best tribute would be lasting reform. The great British pub crawl is about to lose one of its oldest hazards: forgetting your ID. New rules mean approved apps can scan your face, confirm you are over 18 and flash up a QR code for bar staff. Young drinkers should see fewer nights ending at the door - and fewer passports going missing somewhere between the first pint and the kebab shop.
