Nellie Mangaba knew it was hard to find fame as a singer in the Monkeyverse. Her mother had always warned her against it, but she was determined to pursue this career path. At that moment, however, she had to admit that she regretted the decision somewhat. Actually, she could have guessed that most monkeys only went to the opera for the snacks in the break between the acts and the visit to the restaurant afterwards. These ignorant primates spent most of the performance taking short naps on the padded soft chairs. Therefore, the following verdict on her that Nellie read in the current opera magazine was simply an insult: "Madame Mangaba is a fluent vocalist, and a quite respectable representative of light soprano parts; but she lacks the simian charm necessary to a great figure on the lyric stages of the Monkeyverse." Nellie huffed and tossed the newspaper in the corner. As if this simple-minded monkey writer could conclude that. He probably slept through the whole show. Nellie remembered that one of her singing teachers had always said that it was easy to sing well and very difficult to sing badly. She should have realized back then that her singing skills were not decisive for the course of her career. Pondering, she thought about a solution…

Two weeks later, Nellie proved that not only did she have a talent for singing, but she was also a smart business monkey who always had her best interests in mind. And why, on the one hand, force monkeys to enjoy what they apparently didn't and, on the other hand, make herself feel like she was not a good enough when the problem was so easy to solve: She improved the food in the break during the performance. It was so obvious it was almost ridiculous.

With the help of Auguste Escolobier, a chef and a true admirer of her talent, she first created a dessert using the simple ingredients of tender and very ripe peaches, vanilla ice cream and a sweetened raspberry puree. The dish was called "Peach Mangaba" and quickly became the talk of the whole monkey society. This didn't surprise Nellie, knowing that a ripe peach with a sugary sauce would make the apes drool in droves. She could have just served it on cardboard and the primates would still have lined up for her performance. And because she was now very famous, after all everyone knew her name from the peach dessert and the demand for the tickets was now so great, she increased the prices. Sleeping during her performance was now very expensive, so the monkeys tried harder to stay awake.

However, it did not stop with this one dish. A short time later, Nellie made it onto the front pages of all major daily newspapers again with her next culinary creation – the "Mangaba Toast". It was a dry, crispy, and thinly sliced piece of toast that was lightly toasted on both sides under a grill and topped with either melted cheese or pate. It could also be served with soup and salad. Here, too, Nellie was sure that even cardboard baked with cheese would have been well received by the monkeys. Mangaba Toast was soon so successful that it was also commercially available and given to apelings who were teething as a hard food substance to chew. But Nellie was content as long as she could sing in a well-filled opera house at representative ticket prices without any worries. Also, none of the monkeys admitted that they came primarily for the food because they didn't want to appear uncultured.

In the end, Nellie Mangaba not only went down in history as one of the most famous singers of the Monkeyverse, but also set culinary milestones. All she would say about herself is: "To sing well, you have to sing easily. You just have to know how to do it."
