In this news:

Key takeaways

  • Defense secretary Pete Hegseth's 2025 financial disclosure lists Bitcoin holdings valued between $16,000 and $65,000.
  • The filing reports more than $1 million in a single bank account and retirement assets up to $4.35 million.
  • Hegseth also reported individual stock sales, 16 exchange-traded fund purchases, and two mortgages.

A Coinbase wallet, a bank account worth more than $1 million and millions of dollars in retirement investments all appear in defense secretary Pete Hegseth’s latest financial disclosure. The U.S. defense secretary’s 2025 filing also shows Bitcoin holdings, individual stock sales and 16 exchange-traded fund purchases made during the year. CNBC reported that the disclosure lists at least $3.1 million across cash, retirement investments and Bitcoin.

How much Bitcoin does Pete Hegseth own

Hegseth’s Bitcoin appears in two separate entries under “other assets and income,” with both holdings linked to the same Coinbase wallet, according to Decrypt. One entry is valued at $15,001 to $50,000, while the other is listed at $1,001 to $15,000. Based on the reported ranges, the two holdings are worth approximately $16,000 to $65,000 combined. Both entries identify capital gains as the income type.

There is no Bitcoin transaction listed in the filing’s transaction section. Decrypt reported that this section covers purchases and sales above $1,000. So, the filing does not show a Bitcoin purchase or sale above $1,000 during the reporting period.

Hegseth reported more than $1 million in one bank account

The filing lists three U.S. bank accounts, with one reported at more than $1 million, CNBC reported. An account under the same description was listed at $15,001 to $50,000 in Hegseth’s December 2024 nominee disclosure. The latest filing does not provide an upper limit for the account, however. That means the two disclosures cannot be used to calculate the exact change in its value.

His retirement accounts were worth up to $4.35 million

Hegseth and his wife, Jennifer, reported five retirement accounts in the filing. According to CNBC, the combined reported value of those accounts was approximately $2.05 million to $4.35 million. Hegseth’s three accounts were valued at roughly $500,000 to $1.25 million. Jennifer’s two rollover IRAs were listed at approximately $1.55 million to $3.1 million. The accounts included index and Avantis funds.

Hegseth sold Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and other stocks

The filing records several individual stock sales during 2025. On February 7, Hegseth sold holdings in Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Honeywell, KKR and Blackstone, according to Decrypt. The Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman transactions were each reported in the $1,001-to-$15,000 range. About six weeks later, the transactions included sales involving Apple, Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft, Oracle and Visa.

CNBC reported that Hegseth’s ethics agreement required him to consult with ethics officials about potential conflicts but did not specifically require him to sell the Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman holdings.

The family made 16 ETF purchases

The same filing shows a series of purchases of exchange-traded funds. CNBC reported that Hegseth and his family made 16 ETF purchases during 2025. Based on the ranges reported for the transactions, they totaled approximately $1.41 million to $3.05 million. The latest purchase listed was between $50,001 and $100,000 of the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust in October 2025, according to Decrypt.

Two mortgages appear in the filing

Hegseth also reported two mortgages on a personal residence. Both were listed in the $1,000,001-to-$5 million range. One was taken out in 2022, while the other was taken out in 2025 and carries an 8.5% interest rate, Decrypt reported.

What Pete Hegseth reported for 2025

The financial disclosure puts several different pieces of Hegseth’s finances on the record: Bitcoin valued at approximately $16,000 to $65,000, one bank account worth more than $1 million and five retirement accounts reported at a combined $2.05 million to $4.35 million. It also details individual stock sales, 16 ETF purchases and two mortgages. Hegseth signed the report in May 2026. An agency ethics official certified it in August, followed by certification from the Office of Government Ethics on September 18, according to Decrypt.
