Arthur Gorrillhomes was often described as "bohemian" in his habits and lifestyle. Also, he was often considered an eccentric with no regard for contemporary standards or good order. He always found it a pity that his parents didn't choose the more appropriate name "Sherlock" for him, an amalgamation of the two names "Sherwin" and "Shatlock". In the end, they decided to call him Arthur rather boringly.

He was told early on that he was very intelligent – even if he had already suspected this without confirmation. A test revealed that Arthur had an IQ of 190. Considering that the average monkey's IQ was 60-80, his IQ was remarkably high. Though intelligence wasn't everything. Arthur was in his personal habits one of the untidiest primates that ever drove a fellow lodger – in his case his friend John Chimpson – to despair. He kept his cigars in the coal-scuttle, his tobacco in the toe-end of a Persian slipper, and his unanswered correspondence nailed to the very center of his wooden mantelpiece by a jackknife. Since he had a horror of destroying documents, they piled up until every corner of the room was cluttered with bundles of manuscripts. John increasingly felt that Arthur's talent was based more on savantism. Arthur excelled at the things that piqued his interest and was an absolute disaster when it didn't.

Due to his logical skills, he was often asked by the authorities for help in complicated and difficult-to-solve criminal cases. At the beginning of any investigation, Arthur was usually lively and excited. He also had a flair for showmanship, often keeping his methods and evidence secret until the last possible moment to impress observers. However, as in the case of the eaten banana in the locked room, he simply fell asleep because he was so bored after solving the puzzle that he saw no benefit in sharing his conclusions with the other monkeys involved. When he was finally roused, he found his nap disturbed and merely replied grumpily that the culprit must have been someone who liked bananas and could climb through the window because the room was locked – in short, most likely a monkey. After this statement, all the apes in the room were in awe, sure that the ability to come to this brilliant conclusion could only be explained by his superior intelligence.

In stark contrast to his ability to recognize detail was his incredible ignorance born of disinterest. Arthur claimed not to know that the earth revolved around the sun, as such information was irrelevant to his well-being or work – and after hearing that fact from his friend John, he said he would immediately try to forget it. He believed that the primate mind had a limited capacity for storing information and learning useless things would reduce one's ability to learn useful things and disrupt his naptime.

Another of his oddities was that he hated it when his capability of reasoning was actually called "deduction." Instead, Arthur always insisted that the technically very logical process he used was called "abduction". The difference between deductive and abductive reasoning was that the latter was based more on drawing conclusions from observations, although the conclusions drawn were not always necessarily true. But, in deduction, the conclusion drawn from the available data was always necessarily true. John simply had the theory that Arthur wanted to make sure no one would hold him accountable if his guesses were wrong. In the end, since the monkeys of the authorities always ended up thinking of kidnapping when they heard the word "abduction", Arthur didn't stick to his explanations either. In general, he appreciated that the investigation proceeded quickly since he had a habit of not eating during this time. While working on cases, he avoided eating entirely, believing that food would slow his brain down – which was not entirely unjustified, as John noticed that the length of his naps was proportional to the amount of food he ate. So, Arthur always made it a habit to solve the cases between breakfast and lunch, but after that, he was sure that a glass of wine or two at lunchtime would not hurt to escape from the commonplaces of primate existence.
