Luminispectra Mystica, named from Latin for light and appearance, is a bioluminescent fungus with iridescent foliose caps 10-25 cm tall and translucent gill-like structures beneath a broad, wavy pileus. Slender, fibrous stipes exhibit subtle orange hues contrasting cyan luminescent edges highlighting cap margins and gill contours. It forms immobile clusters typical of Iridescent Folia, optimizing spore release. Luminescence spans 470-530 nm via a luciferin-luciferase system producing blue-green light. Found on tropical forest floors at 5-25°C, it saprotrophically decomposes leaf litter and woody debris. Taxonomically, it’s in Basidiomycota, Agaricales, genus Luminispectra, within a 40-species family. Basidiospores dispersed by night-active fauna are emitted from gills. A subterranean mycelial network sustains forest nutrient cycling by breaking down complex polymers.
