Bitcoin ETFs Lost $65 Million In A Day. One BlackRock Fund Accounted For Every Dollar.

In this news:

Key takeaways

  • U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs saw $65.4 million in net outflows on Monday.
  • BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust accounted for the entire withdrawal amount.
  • Cumulative net inflows for all tracked U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs stand at $57.1 billion.

U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds recorded $65.4 million in net outflows Monday, with the entire amount coming from BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust, while other tracked funds reported no net movements.

BlackRock's fund, trading under the ticker IBIT, was the only one to record net withdrawals on October 12, according to Farside Investors data. Fidelity's Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund, ARK 21Shares Bitcoin ETF, Bitwise Bitcoin ETF and Grayscale's Bitcoin funds were among those reporting zero net flows.

Recent Market Flow Reversals

The withdrawals marked a reversal from October 9, when U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs attracted $21.1 million in net investments, following several days of larger outflows earlier in the month.

On October 7, the funds lost a combined $484.9 million, including $207.7 million from BlackRock's IBIT and $105.1 million from Fidelity's fund. The following day, another $244.1 million left the market, with Fidelity accounting for $197.1 million.

Although Monday's withdrawals were concentrated entirely in IBIT, zero net flows at other funds do not mean investors stopped trading their shares. ETF flow data measure net creations and redemptions rather than all buying and selling on stock exchanges.

Cumulative Performance and Totals

Despite the recent withdrawals, IBIT has attracted approximately $65.67 billion in cumulative net inflows since its launch in January 2024.

Across all tracked U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs, cumulative net inflows stood at approximately $57.1 billion through October 12, reflecting the net capital invested since the products began trading rather than their total market value.

The October figures also show how withdrawals have shifted between major funds. While BlackRock accounted for the entire market's net outflow Monday, Fidelity recorded the largest withdrawal on October 8.

Understanding ETF Fund Mechanics

Spot Bitcoin ETFs allow investors to gain exposure to Bitcoin through shares traded on conventional stock exchanges without directly purchasing or storing the cryptocurrency.

BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF seeks to track Bitcoin's price performance and charges an annual sponsor fee of 0.25%.

Unlike direct cryptocurrency purchases, ETF investments involve shares that trade through brokerage accounts. Authorized participants create or redeem shares in large blocks to help keep ETF market prices aligned with the value of their underlying assets.

Daily fund-flow figures reflect changes in net investment through these transactions, but they do not establish why investors withdrew money or whether overall trading activity increased or declined.

ETF withdrawals also do not necessarily correspond to an equivalent drop in Bitcoin's price, which is determined by trading across cryptocurrency exchanges and other markets.
