If You Had Bought Bitcoin at Every All-Time High, How Long Would It Have Taken to Break Even?
In this news:
Key takeaways
- Buyers at previous Bitcoin all-time highs waited 28 to 39 months to break even.
- Bitcoin peaked at $126,080 on October 6, 2025, and trades 34.2 percent below that peak.
- Past cycle top buyers endured drawdowns exceeding 75 percent before recovering.
Historical recovery timelines
Investors who bought Bitcoin at the all-time high during each of its last three completed cycles waited approximately 39 months, then 36 months, and finally 28 months to return to their original investment level. Currently, the fourth group of top buyers is still waiting. Bitcoin peaked at $126,080 on October 6, 2025, and as of October 11, 2026, it is trading near $82,966, roughly 12 months later. This puts Bitcoin about 34.2% below its all-time high, meaning it needs a 52% increase to return to that peak.
The first completed cycle peaked on November 30, 2013, at around $1,150. Bitcoin didn’t close above that price again until February 23, 2017, about 39 months later. In 2017, Bitcoin topped out at about $19,800 on December 17, 2017. Bitcoin first closed above $20,000 again on December 16, 2020, after about 36 months. In the 2021 peak, Bitcoin hit about $69,000 on November 10, 2021, and first closed above that level again on March 11, 2024, about 28 months later.
Each recovery has come faster than the last, but we can’t assume that the next recovery will follow the same pattern. Three cycles offer only a limited perspective, and Bitcoin doesn’t follow a set rule that guarantees a similar outcome in future cycles.
The reality of cycle drawdowns
The break-even wait is only one factor; the drawdown—the drop from the peak to the lowest point before recovery—is a harsher reality. Each completed cycle has seen steep drawdowns. A buyer at the 2013 peak lost 86% at the 2015 low, while a 2017 top buyer lost 84% by December 2018. Similarly, a top buyer in 2021 saw a 77% decline by November 2022. In each cycle, buyers at the peak lost over 75% of their investment’s value at the trough.
In the current cycle, the worst drop so far has been 54.2%, reaching a low of $57,717 on June 30, 2026. This decline is much less severe than those seen in previous cycles. This could indicate a market shift, but it could also suggest this cycle hasn’t reached its lowest point yet, leaving us uncertain which is true.
What the 2025 peak buyers face
Buyers at the $126,080 all-time high should expect a long wait, as history suggests it may take years to recover their investment. Previous waits ranged from about 28 to 39 months, suggesting recovery between early 2028 and early 2029. Still, this projection relies on only three past cycles and offers no specific recovery date.
For a buyer at the 2025 peak, two critical factors must occur: Bitcoin needs to remain above its June 30 low of $57,717, which keeps this cycle’s worst drawdown at 54.2%. Then, it must achieve the full 52% gain to surpass $126,080. A close below $57,717 would suggest we might be heading toward deeper troughs like those in past cycles, while a sustained hold would support the view of a less severe cycle.
