What Prediction Markets Say
Prediction markets are exchanges where people buy and sell contracts on future events, and a price of 60 cents means the crowd gives that outcome roughly a 60% chance. The prices below are bets, not polls, and they were read on 19 October 2026 at 5:45 am ET.
Brazil presidency (Polymarket, US$187.9 million total volume, closes the night of 25 October): Flávio Bolsonaro 77.2%, Lula 22.5%.
Brazil runoff margin (Polymarket, US$2.7 million): Bolsonaro by under 4 points 39.5%, Bolsonaro by 4 to 8 points 27.5%, Lula by under 4 points 20.5%, Bolsonaro by 8 to 12 points 8.0%.
Brazil central bank, 4 November (Polymarket, US$69,000): 25 basis point cut 90.5%, no change 8.6%.
Mexico central bank, 5 November (Polymarket, US$69,000): no change 76.5%, 25 basis point cut 19.2%.
Mexico annual inflation, December 2026 reading (Polymarket, US$85,000): 3.50 to 3.99% 69.8%, 3.00 to 3.49% 12.3%, 4.00 to 4.49% 7.5%.
South Africa annual inflation, December 2026 reading (Polymarket, US$94,000): above 5.0% 85.7%, 4.7 to 5.0% 6.6%.
Argentina 2027 presidency (Polymarket, US$979,000): Javier Milei 48.0%, Axel Kicillof 31.5%; Kalshi, regulated in the US by the CFTC: Milei 56%, Kicillof 25% (last trades).
Kalshi is a US exchange regulated in the United States by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), while Polymarket is a crypto-based platform. Both publish prices that anyone can read for free.
Why we show this: prediction markets turn real-money bets into a live probability that moves within minutes of the news, which is why investors, campaigns and newsrooms in the United States now follow them closely. We show them next to polls and official results, never instead of them.
The Week’s Biggest Moves
The 3.50% to 3.99% outcome in Polymarket’s market on Mexico’s December 2026 annual inflation rose from 33.9% to 69.8%, while 4.00% to 4.49% fell from 29.0% to 7.5% and 3.00% to 3.49% from 22.8% to 12.3%. The market resolves on the figure the statistics office INEGI publishes for December, and trading totals only about US$85,000.
INEGI reported on 8 October that annual inflation was 3.45% in September, with tomatoes and onions among the items that pushed prices up. That print came before our baseline, and the price history shows the largest jump came on 12 and 13 October, so we found no single event behind the move.
Flávio Bolsonaro’s odds of winning the presidency fell from 86.7% on our 12 October read to 77.2%, and the “Bolsonaro by under 4 points” margin outcome rose from 26.5% to 39.5% since 11 October. The Datafolha poll of 15 October put Bolsonaro at 47% and Lula at 45%, down two points for Bolsonaro from 49% on 8 October, which fits the direction of the move.
In Amapá, a small state in Brazil’s far north, Polymarket’s price for a Bolsonaro first place fell from 96.0% to 72.5% while Lula rose from 4.5% to 26.0%. That market holds only US$165,000 in total, and we found no state-level poll or event that explains the swing, so treat it as a thin signal.
The odds that South Africa’s December annual inflation reading comes in above 5.0% rose from 56.2% to 85.7% since 11 October, with most of the climb on 12 October and again on 17 October. The central bank raised its repo rate by 25 basis points to 7.25% on 23 September and Governor Lesetja Kganyago warned that headline inflation could pass 5% in late 2026 and early 2027.
Statistics South Africa put inflation at 4.4% in August, so a reading above 5.0% by December needs a further climb. The next data point is the September figure on Wednesday 21 October, and our South Africa inflation preview explains what it means for the rand.
The odds that Eritrea invades Ethiopia by 31 December fell from 34.0% to 10.5%, and the shorter contract for 31 October sits at 9.8%. The drop came mostly between 14 and 17 October, even though Al Jazeera reported on 7 October, citing Reuters, that witnesses saw Eritrean troops in the Ethiopian town of Adigrat, though Reuters could not verify the accounts.
The contract is strict: it needs a military operation that holds Ethiopian territory for at least 48 hours, backed by consensus credible reporting. We found no event that explains the fall, and our Ethiopia cabinet coverage covers the political backdrop in Addis Ababa.
Polymarket’s price that Assimi Goïta is out as Mali’s president by 30 June 2027 fell from 54.5% to 23.0%. The price had mostly stood above 50% since late September, apart from a brief dip in early October, before it dropped sharply on 11 October, and it has held near 23% to 24% since 14 October.
The market holds about US$62,000, and we found no new announcement behind the move. Mali has faced a deepening jihadist threat around Bamako this year, but we do not link that to this week’s price.
Latin America and Africa Regional Overview
Brazil dominates the board: Polymarket’s presidency market drew US$7.6 million this week and the runoff margin market US$2.2 million, far more than any other contract in the region. See our ongoing runoff odds tracker and our runoff explainer.
Argentina’s 2027 race is priced at 48.0% for Milei and 31.5% for Kicillof on Polymarket, while Kalshi’s last trades stand at 56% and 25%. Our Kicillof versus Milei explainer lays out the contest.
Venezuela’s market on María Corina Machado entering the country by 31 December fell from 35.5% to 24.5%, with no clear trigger we could source; see our Machado coverage. Polymarket prices a US invasion of Venezuela by 31 December at 3.6%.
Cuba’s markets are heavy but low-probability: US military action by 31 December is priced at 9.5%, Miguel Díaz-Canel leaving power by that date at 8.5%, and a US invasion in 2026 at 6.5% (US$3.6 million). Even small probabilities carry weight when this much money is wagered.
Colombia’s central bank decision is priced at 55.0% for no change and 39.5% for a 25 basis point hike, but the market is thinly traded at US$41,000. Mexico’s third-quarter GDP market (US$56,000) favours 2.5 to 3.0% year-on-year growth at 33.5% and 3.0 to 3.5% at 32.0%.
Africa has far fewer large markets than Latin America, and most are thin. The deepest are Nigeria’s presidential contract at US$133,000, Sudan’s ceasefire market at US$120,000 and the Ethiopia-Eritrea contract at US$111,000.
Polymarket gives Nigerian President Bola Tinubu a 72.5% chance of winning the next presidential election against 24.0% for Peter Obi. A Sudan civil war ceasefire by 31 December 2026 is priced at 11.0%.
South Africa’s local elections are due on Wednesday 4 November, and Polymarket’s mayoral markets are small: Cape Town’s Geordin Hill-Lewis is priced at 96.4% (US$11,500) and Durban’s Haniff Hoosen at 50.5% (US$34,000), both thinly traded. Gambia’s presidential market gives Adama Barrow 64.5% against 21.5% for Ousainou Darboe, on only US$12,000.
Decisions Ahead
Wednesday 21 October: South Africa’s September inflation figure, following 4.4% in August; the government’s medium-term budget statement is also due that day.
Sunday 25 October: Brazil’s presidential runoff; Polymarket’s Brazil election markets close that night at 11:59 pm ET.
Friday 30 October: Colombia’s central bank decision and Mexico’s timely estimate of third-quarter GDP, with both Polymarket markets closing that day.
Wednesday 4 November: South Africa’s local elections, and the close of Polymarket’s market on Brazil’s central bank decision.
Thursday 5 November: Polymarket’s market on Mexico’s central bank decision closes.
What It Means for US Readers
For holders of Brazilian bonds, currencies and US-listed funds, the runoff is the event to watch, and the 39.5% price on a Bolsonaro win by under four points shows how close traders think it could be. The central bank markets point the same way as last week, with a Brazilian cut priced at 90.5% in the market that closes on 4 November.
South African inflation matters for dollar-based holders of rand assets, because a hot reading can delay rate cuts there. Ethiopia and Eritrea sit near the Red Sea, so a war would raise risks for shipping routes that US importers rely on.
The large Cuba and Venezuela markets are mostly tail-risk bets, and a low price still reflects real money on a possible US military step. Read them as a gauge of worry, not as a forecast.
We could not confirm a single trigger for the Mexican inflation jump, the Amapá swing, the Machado move, the Mali price or the Ethiopia-Eritrea drop, and we do not guess at causes. Several markets also have rules we have not fully reviewed, so a price may not mean exactly what its title suggests.
Thin markets can move on a few small trades, and most of the week’s biggest swings sit in markets under US$200,000. Neither platform’s prices are forecasts by The Rio Times, and none of this is betting advice.
