THOUSANDS of Revolut users across Spain were locked out of their bank accounts for up to 12 hours after a 'power event' at a data centre triggered a widespread outage.
Google Cloud, which underpins many online platforms, reported an 'issue with multiple services' following a failure at a London data centre complex on Tuesday morning.
Revolut was among several popular services that confirmed disruption, with users prevented from accessing the app, making card payments or sending transfers.
The fault began shortly after 8am and was not declared resolved for the vast majority of users until 6.30pm.
Revolut services restored following cloud failure
A spokesperson for Revolut said: “Early this morning, some Revolut services were affected by a Google Cloud service outage. We can confirm that all services have now been restored.”
“Our customers' money and data are safe and have been at all times. We apologise for the inconvenience caused.”
The outage rippled across the European banking sphere, with companies including Lloyds and HSBC in the UK among those impacted.
Google Cloud confirms resolution after power event
“We have resolved a disruption to Google Cloud services at a third-party facility in our europe-west2 cloud region due to a power event,” a Google Cloud spokesperson said in a statement on Tuesday evening.
“Services have been restored.”
The mass outage comes just days after Revolut resumed opening accounts for residents in Gibraltar following a long-standing freeze.
But the banking app has still not obtained a retail banking licence on the Rock and is instead using a legal loophole to bypass local financial regulations.
The move means expats and Gibraltarians can once again sign up for the popular digital bank, ending a pause on new customer onboarding that had left many frustrated.
Nigel Feetham, Gibraltar's trade and industry minister, said the resumption followed direct talks with the firm, adding that his objective was to 'ensure that Gibraltar residents can access the services offered by major international financial technology businesses'.
